Diarrhea is a very common childhood problem. Young children (<3 yrs.) will have an average 1 to 2 episodes of diarrhea/yr. Those children attending daycare have even higher rates. If your child is not vomiting continue his regular diet. Certain foods are better tolerated, especially starches (rice, potatoes, bread and cereal), lean meats, yogurt, fruits and vegetables are also usually tolerated. Fatty foods or foods high in simple sugar (including tea, juices, and soft drinks) should be avoided. Milk formula or breastmilk in infants (<1) can be continued. If your child is having several more stools than normal and they are quite runny, supplement with PedialyteŽ Oral Rehydration Solution. Diarrhea commonly lasts from 3-5 days; but may last longer. Your child needs to be seen if he develops signs of dehydration, persistent fever, blood in the stools, localized abdominal pain, or you have other concerns or questions.
